Ice cubesIt seems like a very simple question: “Why does hot water freeze faster than cold water?.” But although even from ancient time, the ancient philosopher Aristotle, much later in 17 century the French philosopher and mathematician Descartes and many others were searching for the answer but even today we still don’t have the right answer!

Today this problem is worth £1000 or if you prefer something over than $1500. The scientist from the Royal Society of Chemistry the largest organization in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences is offering £1000 for anyone that will submit the best and most creative explanation of the phenomenon, known today as The Mpemba Effect.

In 1968, young student from Tanzania Erasto Mpemba, during lab session asked his professor, why the ice cream froze more quickly when it was boiled. Of course the reaction of his professor was one of those that you can’t buy with MasterCard. Although his professor thought that Mpemba is wrong, this question of Mpemba reintroduced into the scientific world and ancient problem which have gotten his name.
