The astronauts who have gone on spacewalks they can’t smell the space because of their space suits but upon getting inside in the space station they can smell their helmets, cloves, suits and the odor clings to their tools. Their reports are saying that the space smell like something that normally vegetarian people would not like and that is seared steak!

According the astronauts the scent of space is something unique, that can’t be compared with anything on the Earth but the most close match would be seared steak, hot metal and welding fumes.

The chemist Steven Pearce, who was hired by NASA in order to recreate the space odor, thinks that the metallic aspect of the scent that the astronauts are describing very often may come from high-energy vibrations of ions.
